♟️ MY TURN:
You may have heard me talking about a “portfolio career”.
So what does that mean?
I use this term to describe my journey building multiple revenue streams (and because I don’t think of myself as just a content creator).
My content is part of a portfolio of income streams...
not my only income stream.
If social media went away, I’d still make money.
Let me explain….
The 5C Flywheel of a Portfolio Career
My portfolio career consists of what I call “The 5C Flywheel”
➡️ I create content to help people get inspired about building a portfolio career and build credibility that I can help them solve their building / productivity problems.
Content = First C
➡️ When they are ready and want to dive deeper, they can take one of my courses (or challenges). Both start with the letter C.
Courses = Second C
➡️ As they go through my courses, I invite them to join my community of builders for an extra layer of accountability.
Community = Third C
➡️ As they join the community and see the value of personalized coaching in a group setting, I offer a slot in my 1:1 coaching program.
Coaching = Fourth C
➡️ All of these create opportunities for deeper consulting work (consulting = workshops for companies, speaking engagements, Fractional CMO work, brand strategy sessions, etc).
Consulting = Fifth C

But one of the Cs is the lynchpin of all the others.
And it’s the one most people skip .
Can you guess which one?
If you guessed community, great job!
Most people skip building a community.
And yet my Office Hours community fuels every single other part of the flywheel.
How?
- Office Hours group coaching feeds my 1:1 coaching.
- Office Hours conversations inspire my social and newsletter content.
- Office Hours workshops and challenges fuel my portfolio of workshops and speaking engagements.
- Office Hours opens doors for more consulting work.
I’ve spent the last 16 months building Office Hours and wanted to share the top 5 lessons I’ve learned.
PS - I’m hosting a “How To Build a 6 Figure Community” workshop later this month. If you are interested in how to get started, sign up here!
♟️ YOUR TURN:
5 THINGS I’VE LEARNED BUILDING A 6 FIGURE COMMUNITY
Lesson #1: Platform matters
I started with my community between email + slack + Kajabi and quickly realized how important the platform is.
Choosing the right platform allows you to scale faster, create stickier (yeah, I hate that word too) members and spend LESS time on the operational stuff.
After 6 months of doing things manually, I met the team at Mighty Networks and took advantage of their transition services to seamlessly bring all my content to Mighty Networks.
It looked more professional AND saved me over 10 hours a week in community management.
Within the first two weeks I saw two KPIs improve:
KPI #1: Member to member connection
KPI #2: Content consumption (People could see all the content more easily!)
PS If you are interested in using Mighty Networks, click here to get access to the same white glove service.
Lesson #2: Community is about them, not me
Sure maybe people join because they want to learn what I’m doing
but a community is NOT a community if it’s 1:many.
A community is only a community when people help one another.
I learned this the hard way.
I was sharing every test, SOP and strategy from my journey and realized we have 100+ other members with their own experiences and learnings.
The more we opened up the community for member-to-member connections with accountability pods and group coaching – the higher the satisfaction score.

Lesson #3: Identify and Engage Your Ideal Member
When you start a community, you get excited to help everyone.
But then you find you are actually helping no one.
When we moved to Mighty Networks I started being more clear that I helped people building portfolio careers without burning out.
If you are a person looking to monetize your knowledge while juggling life on top of it – Office Hours is for you.
Understanding your IDEAL member and their specific needs enables you to grow faster because they will talk about you.
Case and point:

Lesson #4: Define a Compelling Big Purpose:
When you build a community it can be easy to just say “come be like me!”.
Well guess what….
That may mean something to your first circle of influence (people who KNOW you) but that means nothing to the next circles of influence.
Articulate a clear and motivating purpose that resonates with your Ideal Members.
Office Hours enables you to build a portfolio of revenue streams to increase freedom over your time, money and life.
I work when I want. There is no ceiling to what I can make.
But I needed to articulate that as a bigger promise.

Lesson #5: A High-Touch Welcome
I was trying to use technology to onboard new members but then realized that’s the antithesis of the DNA of the community.
Office Hours is about connection.
So I created a new member welcome session where I meet every single new member and learn why they came, what their goals are and how I can best support them.
Then, I try to incorporate new members’ into the hot seat sessions in group coaching as quickly as possible so they get clarity and wins within the first 30 days!
A positive first impression encourages continued involvement and fosters a sense of belonging from the outset.
