The Power of "NOT RIGHT NOW"

↓

Quick Spin:

  • Why we chase shiny objects?
  • The types of working genius
  • 3 tactics that help me bring more finisher energy to my starter personality

♟️ MY TURN:

In group coaching every week we talk about what’s holding us back from achieving our goals.

And the thing I hear most?

Distractions.

  • “I keep trying to create new things.”
  • “I get distracted by shiny objects.”
  • “I am great at starting….not finishing.”

So I wanted to understand what is behind our shiny object chasing.

Rather than blame ourself….it’s important to KNOW yourself.

A Working Genius

Are you a Starter, Finisher, or Stabilizer?

Never heard of these terms?

The terms refer to types of working genius, and they were popularized by Patrick Lencioni in his framework called "The 6 Types of Working Genius."

Let’s discuss 3 common types so you can pick your genius….

  • A Starter likes to get the ball rolling – they are the visionary. They see the world through a lens of opportunity and how things can change for the better. They are passionate and driven by new ideas.

  • A Finisher likes to get stuff done – they love to plug into someone else’s ideas and help bring them to life. They naturally see what it will take to accomplish a goal – the steps, resources, and timeline – and don’t feel satisfied until they see measurable progress.

  • A Stabilizer likes to keep the engine running – stability drives them – chaos, messes, and surprises drive them crazy! They have an eye for detail and a heart of service, knowing that a strong foundation is what keeps the vision (ideas) alive. They are satisfied when everything runs as it should, daily, and with excellence.

Which one resonates with you the most?

It may not come as a surprise but I’m a starter.

I love ideating new ideas and need to surround myself with systems and people to help me take them across the finish line.

Thank goodness for my Athena EA and our 50+ SOPs every week.

Most Builders are "STARTERS"

Most solopreneurs or entrepreneurs find themselves in the “Starter” category and it can be hard to see projects all the way through.

A few examples I see in people building portfolio careers:

  • Wanting to attack a new channel before optimizing the first.
  • Wanting to launch a new product instead of building recurring revenue from the first.
  • Wanting to find a new client instead of building systems of scale with the current one.
  • Wanting to find new email subscribers instead of retaining the current ones.

Let’s talk through a common scenario of ambitious people (like the 70k+ that are reading this newsletter)…….

It’s a new month. (I can’t believe it’s April already!)
I’m going to accomplish SO much.
I’m going to get in great shape.
I’m going to be the best parent, partner and/or friend.
I’m going to crank on so much at work.
And then week 1 goes by.
Life happens.
Week 2 goes by.
Then the shame spiral starts.
You’ve made 10% progress on 10 different things instead of 100% progress on 1-2 things.
This is the blight of the starter.
Sound familiar?

♟️ YOUR TURN:

Many times, when I think about how I’ve been able to accomplish all that I have over the years, it’s been in large part to my ability to set things down.

To say “not right now”.

Or to say “this no longer serves me”.

Here are the 3 Anti Goal Systems I use every week to channel more finisher energy.

#1 Two-Dos vs. Parking Lot

Long To-do lists are optimized for “starter” energy. We love to ideate all the new things we can work on and then the shiny ones get our attention.

I want you to ditch the to-do list for a TWO-DO list.

Every day you are going to work on two things that are the most impactful to your goals for the month.

Everything else goes in a parking lot.

And you say NOT RIGHT NOW.

#2 Mosquito Tasks → Power Hour

All those annoying life tasks that buzz around your head?

Things like:

  • Pay that bill.
  • Check on that thing
  • Book that dr. appointment

These are mosquito tasks and pull us away from the things we are trying to finish.

You are going to move these into a “Power Hour” list in your phone and 1x a week, you will have a Power Hour to squash as many of those mosquitos.

Go ahead and set your list + calendar invite now.

If one starts buzzing in your head, you put it on the list and say NOT RIGHT NOW.

#3 Monthly Anti-Goals

Every month I create an anti-goal list.

The things I will NOT spend energy on so I can focus on the goals I’ve set.

Here’s mine for April:

  • I’m NOT going to take on consulting work as I prepare for my book tour.
  • I’m NOT going to take on unpaid speaking engagements.
  • I’m NOT taking meetings on Mondays and Fridays to focus on deep work.

I’m trying to finish the projects on my plate that will move me towards my goals.

I hope these 3 systems help you cross that finishing line.

Cheers to Finisher energy in April!!!
