Are they Mirrors or Telescopes?

Quick Spin:

  • A vulnerable story about doing the work
  • Why some people don't support our growth
  • 4 Mirrors to check when building community

🧩 Thanks for keeping Life's a Game Free!

A few months ago I decided to switch all my courses and community from Kajabi to Mighty Networks and someone recently said to me "I had no clue you had all of this!".

Most people don't know what a digital community could even look like so I created this loom video to show you around my Office Hours community.

If you're ready to start a community - definitely check out Mighty Networks!

♟️ MY TURN:

When I started to really grow and change, I noticed an uncomfortable reality:

Some people didn’t like it.

Vulnerable share…..but in my first marriage my partner didn’t allow me to go to therapy until I had an emotional breakdown thanks to postpartum depression and juggling 3 kids under the age of 4 while working and a husband that was traveling a lot for his new startup.

But that breakdown led to a breakthrough.

I went to therapy and started doing the work.

And the more I learned and grew….

The more I could feel the reigns tighten.

The more I could feel he wanted to control.

He even said to me, “Where’s the girl I married?!” (I was 19 when we got engaged…..that “girl” was long gone)

The hardest part of growth and self-discovery is learning which people, places, and opportunities create an environment conducive for positive change......

versus those who benefit from you staying exactly as you are.

Why would someone want you to stay exactly where you are?

Because that means they can as well.

To some people, we are mirrors, and to others, we are telescopes.

Those who see us as mirrors:

  • view our growth and success as reflecting their stagnancy.
  • feel our brightness casts a shadow on them.
  • The brighter we grow, the more they squint and try to dim us.

These are the people you want to consider the value they bring into your life.

Anyone trying to tear you down to bring you back to their level is living in a fun house full of mirrors that you cannot remove them from.

On the other hand…..

Other people see you as a telescope.

You expand their horizon.

As you grow and expand, you display the infinite nature of life.

They want to be an additive to your life and are grateful to be in your orbit.

Look for people who see you as a telescope, not a mirror.

And vice versa.

You want people who show you what could be.

Those who look at the world and see opportunities and are excited to be on this journey with you.

This is also why I am so bullish on the power of community and why I’ve invested so much time into building Office Hours (see this video for a BTS look of my Office Hours community) for people looking to build a portfolio of income.

When you start something new, you need a built-in group of telescopes!

Want to check your mirrors and find your telescopes?

♟️ YOUR TURN:

In psychology, accountability when doing things with others is largely influenced by group dynamics.

If you are building a community or just looking to see if a place or person is conducive for positive change, I want you to check these 4 mirrors:

MIRROR 1: Social comparison

People tend to compare their own behavior to the group norm, leading them to adjust their actions to align with the expected level of accountability within the team.

Look around and see if the people around you are trying to push the group behaviors in a positive direction or focus on all the things holding them back.

MIRROR 2: Collective responsibility

When working towards a shared goal, people feel more responsible for the group's success, encouraging them to hold themselves and others accountable.

AKA a rising tide lifts all ships.

  • Do your friends make intros and ask how they can help?
  • Does your partner see raising the kids or managing the home as a shared goal?

MIRROR 3: Psychological safety

A supportive environment ensures individuals feel comfortable admitting mistakes, and providing feedback is crucial for fostering accountability within a group.

  • Do you feel comfortable sharing your missteps with people around you?

MIRROR 4: Peer pressure

Positive peer pressure can motivate individuals to uphold standards and contribute to the group effort, while negative peer pressure can discourage accountability.

  • Do you feel paralyzed or energized after leaving time with the group?

These are also the 4 mirrors I check as I build my 6-figure community with Mighty Networks but also as I evaluate who I spend my time with.
